Our Performance

At 6:33pm (when the first picture below was taken), we were almost ready to warm up. Doc went over to the warm-up area, followed by the rest of the band as they got ready. It was still overcast like it had been all day. At 6:43, after about a minute of warm-up, everyone was running back to the buses to get out of the rain! It seemed to come out of nowhere! At 7:00, Doc called the seniors over to ask if we should perform or not. They voted to perform, and since it had stopped raining for a few minutes and the sky looked brighter, we had everyone move to the performance area.

The performance area was at the Drive-In attraction (which was closed at the time), but made a perfect backdrop for our performance. We started the performance at 7:15 (not much warmup!), and played to an appreciative audience. Many of the kids who gathered to watch us were in other bands also performing in the park that day. The band sounded wonderful as they played Georgia on my Mind, theme from The Incredibles, I'm a Believer (from Shrek, or for those of us from an older generation, from the Monkees), Phantom of the Opera, the first movement of the marching band performance of Scheherazade, and an American medley.

The rain crept back in during the performance, starting with a mist, and became a light rain at during the last piece. The band performed so well. Our park attendant told us that we were the best band that played that day.

The rain stopped when we got back to the bus, and we dried and put up the instruments, then returned to the park until closing.

The Looooooong Ride Home

The buses left the park at around 11pm. Most everyone was awake through the first stop to get snacks (and fuel the buses) just outside of Atlanta. The quickly dropped off, and the buses were quiet as everyone tried to sleep. We got back to ADHS at 6:30am and efficiently unloaded the buses and trailers, and the parents took their tired students home. Everyone had a great time.
