Fair Share Schedule

Fair Share Obligation 2008-2009 Marching Band

Dear Band Students and Parents:

As treasurers of the Band Boosters, we want to review with each of you the “fair share obligation” for the upcoming marching band season.  A great deal of effort and thought went into preparing the budget and coming up with creative ways to ease the financial burden while fulfilling the requirements of the fair share.  Each marching band student is assessed two types of commitments: 1) a financial commitment of $975, and 2) a service commitment of 6 shifts per family (equal to $150).  By participating in 6 shifts at any of our four major venues (Durham Bulls, RBC Center, State Fair Parking, Belk Box Stand) a family not only completes the service requirement but also reduces the $975 financial commitment down to at least $825.  The remainder of the financial commitment can be completed by working additional shifts at the four major venues or by participating in other fundraising opportunities such as fruit/nut sales, entertainment book sales, scrip and grocery store coupons.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • A $75 deposit is due on June 6, 2008.
  • The first payment of $450 is due prior to band camp (July 24th, Thursday of pre-camp).  You may mail your payment to us at the above address or bring it to pre-camp. The $75 deposit does not count towards this payment (a change from past years).
  • Any credit balance you may have built up in your student’s account as of June 30, 2008 may be used toward the initial cash payment.
  • The remaining $450 can be paid in six monthly $75 payments or fundraising opportunities, beginning in September and continuing through February. To set up an automatic payment in your online banking program, use PO Box 293, Cary, NC 27512-0293, for the address (do not use the school address), and use your child’s full name as the account number.
  • Although it is suggested that you work off the $975 financial portion of the fair share, you may pay cash in lieu of participating in the fundraising opportunities.  However, families that do not complete any of their 6 shifts of service commitment are responsible for paying the $150 value or the portion of the service commitment not completed ($25 per individual shift) out of pocket in addition to the $975 financial commitment.
  • All service and financial commitments are to be completed by March 31, 2009.  Any portion that has not been fulfilled by March 31, 2009 will become a straight financial obligation and is due on that date.
  • Band account statements will be emailed to you at the beginning of each month. Please ensure we have a valid email address on file for your family.

Your account will initially be charged the full amount ($975) and the service commitment ($150) to help you plan for payment options and fundraiser opportunities, but the amounts you’ll need to pay are dependent upon your band account balance on the dates payments are due.

No student is turned away from participating in marching band because of financial hardship. There are several options available based on your family’s situation. Please complete the financial aid form for consideration by Friday, June 6.  Please contact John Bryant or Duane MacEntee for further information.
